Healing Through Horse Wisdom

Transformative Equine Facilitated Initiative for At-Risk Youth and Young Adults of North Central Florida

Embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery at Tudor Farm.

This transformational program leverages a connection with horses to create personal change and healing.

About the Program

Discover how to overcome challenges and gain confidence by working with equine-facilitated learning.

The Equine Harmony Program focuses on youth and young adults who are struggling with risky behaviors, school, substance abuse, family instability, mental health, and other issues affecting their life choices.

The program offers three powerful approaches to help youth overcome negative patterns of beliefs and actions.

Experiential Learning

Involves participants actively engaging in experiences and reflecting on them to develop new skills, attitudes, and ways of thinking. With horses, this approach can be incredibly effective, as it allows participants to:

  • Through hands-on activities such as grooming, feeding, and leading horses, participants learn responsibility, discipline, and practical life skills.

  • Encouraging participants to reflect on their interactions with horses helps them gain insights into their own behaviors, emotions, and thought patterns.

  • Horses provide immediate, non-judgmental feedback through their reactions to human behavior, helping participants quickly see the impact of their actions and learn more effective ways of interacting.

Strengths-Based Approach

Involves participants actively engaging in experiences and reflecting on them to develop new skills, attitudes, and ways of thinking. With horses, this approach can be incredibly effective, as it allows participants to:

  • By recognizing and leveraging their strengths in working with horses, participants can experience success and build confidence.

  • Focusing on what participants can do and how they can use their strengths to overcome challenges fosters a sense of empowerment and agency.

  • Tailoring activities to each participants' strengths and interests ensures that the program is relevant and engaging for everyone.

Trauma-Informed Care

Involves participants actively engaging in experiences and reflecting on them to develop new skills, attitudes, and ways of thinking. With horses, this approach can be incredibly effective, as it allows participants to:

  • Ensuring that the environment is physically and emotionally safe for all participants is crucial. Horses, being sensitive and responsive animals, can help create a sense of safety and trust.

  • Consistent, predictable interactions with horses can help participants build trust and form healthy relationships, which are often disrupted by trauma.

  • Working with horses can help participants learn to regulate their emotions, a common challenge for those with trauma histories. The calming presence of horses and the routine of their care can be particularly beneficial.

By integrating these approaches, this program provides a holistic and supportive environment that fosters growth, healing, and empowerment for at risk youth and young adults.
